Why we teach

Since our founding, we've been committed to connecting with people and sharing what we do. On one hand, because information design is still unfamiliar to many and requires detailed explanation. On the other, because it remains a challenge to attract skilled professionals to our team and field. As pioneers, we've made it our mission to raise awareness and inspire enthusiasm for data visualization, information design, and all related disciplines. In doing so, we aim to unlock creativity and foster deeper understanding.

Our Teaching Principle

We teach Modular Information Design (MID), developed by Superdot, in a systematic way. Regardless of course length – from 2-hour workshops to multi-week modules – we build a fundamental understanding of content analysis, diagram types, visual dimensions, and composition. Participants learn how to structure complex information. The proven design principle is central: we work slowly and deliberately on paper. It’s not about right or wrong – it’s about systematically creating variations and strengthening judgement through shared reflection rounds – data and visual literacy. Learning by doing – serious insights emerge through creative exploration.

Workshop Offers

We develop tailor-made workshop formats for different needs – all based on our proven MID system. «What?! I never thought we could communicate this content in such an engaging way» is something we often hear in our inspiration workshops and our «Diagram Creation Trainings».

Inspiration

+

Inspiration and needs-assessment packages for organizations to explore the field of information design and reflect on their own needs in a participatory way.

Foundation

+

Learn the fundamentals of MID through hands-on sessions – optionally using your own data. See section above: «Our Teaching Principle».

Combination

+

Of course, it’s also possible to combine Inspiration and Foundation. Duration is flexible – from 2-hour to 3-day workshops.

Ideas for new formats

+

Coaching, mentoring, summer studio workshops, Thursday evening online courses.

Academic Track

Since 2013, we have been active in academic teaching, continuously developing and validating the MID system. Our university collaborations range from one-time workshops to leading full modules.

Theory online course in Modular Information Design

This step-by-step course in English is the perfect introduction to Modular Information Design, based on our book. We go through it page by page to ensure you fully understand each concept and detail. Ideal for deepening your understanding and confidently applying the principles to your own projects.

Practice online course in Modular Information Design

The 2.5-hour course on the Domestika platform – «Data Visualization Course: Turning Data into Art» – is divided into 16 lessons. In this comprehensive course on data visualization, you’ll learn how to turn complex data into compelling visual stories using pen, paper, and Adobe Illustrator.

FAQ

Who are the workshops for?

+

Our workshops operate at the intersection of content, design, and communication – from engineers to journalists, from marketing teams to executives. The MID system is intentionally interdisciplinary – no prior experience required.

Do you also work with universities?

+

Since 2013, we’ve been teaching at leading Swiss universities and are very active in academic settings.

Can you run workshops using our own data?

+

Yes – and it’s highly effective. We regularly work with custom datasets – from corporate data to scientific research – allowing you to learn MID while solving real-world challenges.

Do you offer individual support?

+

Yes, we provide coaching and mentoring for designers as well as tailored programs. From summer studio workshops for individuals to Thursday evening online courses – many formats are possible.

What makes your workshops different from other training programs?

+

Our approach is systematic and always starts with pen and paper. Instead of focusing on specific digital tools, we teach a reproducible and universally applicable methodology. Participants gain a powerful thinking framework for independent problem-solving – not just isolated techniques.
